Recently, several board members of the Saratoga Lake Association had the pleasure of participating in a guided hike up the iconic Snake Hill, led by Rob Davies, the Executive Director of Saratoga PLAN (Preserving Land And Nature). This 30-acre promontory, now owned and preserved by Saratoga PLAN, offers stunning views over the entirety of Saratoga Lake, a sight that left everyone in awe.

The property, previously owned by the Stewarts Corporation, was acquired with the generous support of New York State funding. This acquisition ensures the preservation of this beautiful natural landmark, allowing residents and visitors alike to enjoy its splendor for generations to come

Our hike started with a brief introduction by Rob, who shared the history of Snake Hill and its significance to the local community. As we ascended the trail, the lush greenery and diverse flora provided a serene backdrop, making the hike both enjoyable and educational. Rob’s extensive knowledge of the local ecosystem enriched our experience, offering insights into the various plant species and wildlife that inhabit the area.

Reaching the summit, we were rewarded with panoramic views of Saratoga Lake. The sight was nothing short of breathtaking, and it was easy to see why preserving this area is so crucial. The clear morning sky and tranquil waters below created a picturesque scene that everyone cherished.

The preservation of Snake Hill is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Saratoga Lake Association, Saratoga PLAN, and the wider community. To further these efforts, Saratoga PLAN will be hosting a public event in early August to seek public comment and input into the future plans for the site’s use and ongoing preservation. This event will also mark the launch of a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the long-term preservation and maintenance of this cherished natural area.

We encourage all community members to attend this event, learn more about the plans for Snake Hill, and consider contributing to the fundraising effort. Your support will help ensure that this beautiful promontory remains a natural sanctuary for wildlife and a peaceful retreat for all who visit.

Stay tuned for more details about the upcoming event, and we look forward to seeing you there! Together, we can make a lasting impact on the preservation of Saratoga Lake’s natural beauty.

The Saratoga Lake Association (SLA) played a pivotal role in the preservation of Snake Hill, a 30-acre forested landmark on the eastern shore of Saratoga Lake in Stillwater. Recognizing the ecological and scenic value of this iconic site, the SLA launched a social media campaign and engaged with conservation groups, the state legislature, and Saratoga PLAN. SLA’s advocacy efforts culminated in the successful acquisition of Snake Hill in late 2023 for $1 million, securing the lake’s largest unprotected shoreline. With funding from New York State, Saratoga PLAN purchased the property from Stewart’s Shops, ensuring its conservation for future generations.
